Taipei Arena Uses Social Media in Giant DOOH Install

By Case Study

Facebook users see their photos larger than life in unique digital display

Taipei Arena is an impressive structure, built in 2005 to host major international indoor sporting events in Taiwan, holding 15,000 people. Additionally, 2,000 feet² is dedicated to an array of shopping, eating and entertainment facilities. With a huge audience – nearly 13 million visitors to the complex as well as nearby commuters – Nova Media wanted an impactful way to capture attention while at the same time creating a memorable, entertaining experience. Additionally, the opportunity to generate advertising revenue as well as provide a public service with government and non-profit messaging presented itself.

A Scala digital out of home (DOOH) experience integrated with social media was the solution they decided on, conceptualized and executed in August and September 2013. The solution uses the largest digital display screen in all of Taiwan, measuring 2400 meters², on the outside wall of the arena to display photos shared on social media in an engaging fashion. For an entertainment complex, offering those in and around the arena the unique experience of seeing their name and photo on such a large scale carries over the branding of a fun and exciting place to be and visit.

Quick facts

  • Nova Media had to capture the attention of nearly 13 million annual visitors and commuters outside Taipei Arena. The resulting solution:
    • Uses a 2400 meters² LED screen to display photos and messages from social media
    • Incorporates an easy-to-use mobile app for uploading photos into the approval queue
    • Integrates with Facebook by posting a mock-up picture to say when their photo would appear, getting them and their friends excited about seeing it
    • Captures the image being displayed via webcam and carried the social engagement even further by posting the real-world picture on the user’s Facebook wall
    • Also generates advertising revenue and, as a public service, displays government and emergency messages

Additional installations by Nova Media include targeted dynamic advertising displays in a bridal district and high-end shopping district.

For such an impactful experience, the process for users couldn’t be easier. A Facebook member downloads the free mobile app and uploads a picture of their choice. After a quick quality-assurance approval process, photos make it into the display queue, and a mock-up version of what the arena will look like is posted to the user’s Facebook page. To take the audience engagement even further, the Facebook message also lets them know exactly when to head over to Taipei Arena and see their photo displayed. Lastly, once the picture is displayed on the arena, a webcam snaps a shot of it in action and posts it to the user’s Facebook page, finishing the seamless social experience. In the end, the arena has created a fun, exciting engagement with potential visitors and essentially with all their social media followers.

The displays also showcase commercial advertisements in addition to the social media posts, generating ad revenue. The flexibility of the Scala platform allows for easy drag-and-drop, playlist-style scheduling of the videos and posts via Scala Enterprise Content Manager, which can be updated from anywhere with a just a web browser. Two additional digital installments by Nova Media, powered by the Scala platform, are Venus and Cupid Taipei LED displays used for targeted advertising in high-traffic areas of Taipei. Having video content that can be centrally updated was a key to the success of these projects, ensuring that the three screens of differing dimensions are relevant and running smoothly.

“Working with the Scala platform indeed made a lot of positive impacts to the project, most notably for its convenience and flexibility. Being able to easily update videos to three different places immediately helped us to gain our clients’ trust. Being able to make the updates with internet access as the only requirement is essential to our success, particularly in emergency situations. In addition, the system has a very easy to understand structure for updating videos, creating playlists and schedules which helps to save a lot of time!”
Roy Huang, project manager, Nova Media

The Venus screen measures about 113 meters² and is located in a popular entertainment and retail district, featuring high-quality hotels, department stores, foreign restaurants and boutiques. The screens dynamically display sharp, eye-catching imagery specifically targeted for the high-end business people and tourists that comprise the audience. Cupid Taipei LED is strategically placed in an area of Taipei with many wedding dress and wedding-related stores. Standing at 59 meters², the content predominantly promotes commercial advertisements of specific interest to that crowd.

Scala solution powers 460 screens for leading cinema chain

Leading Russian cinema chain Formula Kino, which boasts 264 movie theatres over 35 locations across three Russian time zones, is rolling out extensive Scala-supported digital signage across new locations as part of the modernization of its on-location customer communications, which started in 2013.

The brand is focusing on entertainment as well as comfort: it not only offers its customers premium theatres but also runs advanced technologies such as as 3D PRO and RealD 3D to deliver best-in-class 3D experiences.

[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″]

With support from local systems integrator Dismart, the cinema chain is using a single, centralized and automated digital signage solution from Scala to replace three separate, siloed software solutions.

[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″]
“The only system that can handle this volume of information in a centralised manner is Scala. This means that Formula Kino is no longer managing three different software systems or trying to integrate various systems that can only handle a single type of job.” Igor Korotkov, Commercial director of Dismart

Digital signage software powerful enough to drive content to four different areas of the venue

“The company was seeking a single digital signage software powerful enough to drive content to four different areas of the venue: the video walls, the ticketing desk, three-by-one digital posters and the menu boards in the food court,” explained Igor Korotkov, commercial director of Dismart. “The only system that can handle this volume of information in a centralized manner is Scala. This means that Formula Kino is no longer managing three different software systems or trying to integrate various systems that can only handle a single type of job.”

Since 2013, Formula Kino has deployed Scala to support 460 screens driven by 114 players in newly opened locations. At each location – 35 cinemas across three times zones – a single Scala-driven cinema hosts up to four three-by-three size video walls, two three-by-one digital posters, up to 15 menu board screens and between four and eight ticketing desk screens.

Quick facts

  • 100+ Players
  • 450+ Screens
  • 35+ Location
  • 4 three-by-three size video walls

The video walls are automated, meaning Scala players use Scala Content Manager and Scala Script from any location across Russia to automatically connect to a centralized library of movie trailers located at the Formula Kino Moscow headquarters and select relevant content based on individual location and time zone, thus building a tailored playlist for each cinema.

“The Scala solution has allowed Formula Kino to minimise the amount of time and resource spent on keeping content up to date at various locations,” continued Korotkov. “The Scala Script enables users to automate functions that could not be automated before. The player now knows automatically what to do, at what time and for how long.”

Andrey Alikberov, CIO of Formula Kino, feels that the Scala solution has enabled him to significantly reduce the amount of resources necessary to manage and update information changes, such as movie show times, bar menus and upcoming movie promotions, across the chain. “In addition, the use of the three-by-one digital posters delivered a return on investment (ROI) in less than one year, which was even faster than we had expected,” he noted. “Our Scala digital signage solution is a great advertising tool, it’s an investment which paid off very quickly.”

[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″]
“Scala has offered Formula Kino a flexible, open digital signage system that practically runs itself, acting like a self-driven platform across a vast array of screens and time zones,” Natalja Böhm, Strategic Account Manager DACH at Scala

V&A Stylish Digital Ticketing

By Case Study

Stylish Digital Marketing

Quick facts

  • Exhibition Road Quarter at V&A designed by Amanda Levete Architects
  • Scala Content Manager Scala Designer
  • Single video wall or eight independent touchscreens
  • Nine Scala media player licenses
  • Six additional general signage screens
  • Eight 55″ screens, 45° angle

As part of an ambitious Exhibition Road entrance redesign, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) turned to Intevi / Scala to make its vision of a large-scale digital ticketing desk and video wall a reality. The result is stylish, unique, and most of all provides visitors with an exquisitely streamlined experience as they enter the space.

Versatile, Eye-Catching Video Wall

Upon entering the V&A via the new Exhibition Road entrance, which also includes a courtyard and temporary exhibition gallery, visitors’ attention is drawn to the large video wall (32ft x 2ft) is made up of eight consecutive 55 inch screens. The screens, supported by a custom made wall-mounted housing and mounted behind protective glass with interactive touch lm applied, oat at an angle of 45 degrees, which makes them easily accessible for all visitors.

The eight screens, each equipped with a chip and pin reader and a printer, can run separately as vending screens or in unison as a larger video wall, which can run video content or promotional material across the length of the installation.
“The large video wall attracts the eye of the customers like a call to action
as they enter this gigantic space,” said Tom Scott, managing director of Scala platinum partner Intevi. “Then from each individual screen, customers can purchase tickets for specific exhibitions or events.”

“Intevi have once again proven to be a leading partner in both execution craftsmanship, guidance to the customer and vison when it comes to creating a very impactful yet useful dynamic digital signage solution.”
– Harry Horn, GM EMEA & VP Marketing Global of Scala
Independent Touch

Each display at the V&A supports independent touch, where each foil operates separately to the one next to it. Each alternate touch foil runs on a different frequency, to prevent interference between customers inputting financial data during their ticket purchases.

“The initial web pages for the ticketing solution are transparent, to allow traditional Scala content to play on each screen until a customer interacts with the display. Once a customer interacts with the display the web based ticketing solution come to the fore,” explained Scott. “Scala supported the roll out of this refined independent touch foil solution perfectly.”

Enabled by Scala

This was the first time the V&A had implemented Scala’s digital signage solution. Scott said,“Scala was the only software that allowed us to run eight individual media players driving each ticket station independently, or to run a single player with eight outputs to turn the installation into a single display fabric.”

The key to the success of the digital ticketing combination of nine licenses of the Scala media player in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, Scala Content Manager and Scala Designer. In addition, Scala is also driving six general digital signage screens across the museum. The V&A team creates and uploads its own content in-house.

“Scala’s content management system, combined with the ability to provide both interaction and touch, made Scala the obvious and perfect choice of digital signage vendor for this project.”
– Tom Scott, managing directer Intevi
Project Summary

As part of an ambitious Exhibition Road entrance redesign, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) turned to Intevi / Scala to make its vision of a large-scale digital ticketing desk and video wall a reality. The video wall, enabled by Scala, is made up of eight 55” screens and supports independent touch. Visitors can learn more about specific exhibitions or events and purchase tickets on screen.

Digital signage supports mobilcom-debitel transformation

By Case Study

With over 14 million customers and over 600 shops in Germany, telephone services provider mobilcom-debitel has deployed a centralised digital signage network, driven by Scala technology, to support its change in strategic direction from service provider to digital lifestyle provider.

Quick facts

  • Roll out across 375 stores in Germany
  • Nearly 500 screens and players running on Scala
  • All stores run a single display at the cashier area and in 180 of the stores, an additional window touchscreen display is added
  • Components such as heating thermostat or motion detector can be operated by remote control using a Scala script
The Challenge

mobilcom-debitel previously ran a small-scale, in-house digital signage network in a small number of shops and wanted to expand the reach and capabilities of this particular channel to make it more professional and resilient.

The goal of the retailer was to create an eye-catching communications channel in-store. Any new digital signage network needed to support relevant marketing communications for products such as mobile phones. It also needed to be a useful tool to help staff with cross-selling and service provision in-store.

The retailer was seeking a partner who could provide country-wide deployment and support services. “We wanted potential partners to offer us a comprehensive care-free package,” explained Ingrid Thieme, mobilcom-debitel. “With this I mean flexible software solutions support and graphical content creation. TopRed Media was able to offer us all of that.”

The Solution

mobilcom-debitel approached 15 companies, before finally selecting a Scala solution delivered by partner TopRed Media. The solution was chosen for its flexibility and great capacity for future expansion. Working with TopRed Media and South African graphics company Ethniks Systems, mobilcom-debitel has rolled out a country-wide digital signage network, powered by Scala, across 375 of its stores across Germany.

Scala technology, including templates and a content management system, is used to drive nearly 500 displays and players. All stores run a single display at the cashier area and in 180 of the stores, an additional window touchscreen display, managed via Scala player software, has been added in the shop window to promote the retailer’s energy solutions.

Mirko Haaser, Managing Director of TopRed Media, explained: “For the shop window, we’ve developed a kiosk application that can be managed from the outside. Components can be operated by remote control using a Scala script. For instance, a heating thermostat or motion detector can be managed. It allows us to operate an IP camera, turn appliances on and off, or manage the light in the store.”

“Shops use the Scala software to update their opening hours or UPS delivery details and also, to control when the digital signage displays are running and when to switch them off. At night, they would typically be off from 10pm to 5am especially in shopping malls which are deserted. However on the pedestrian facing street, they can run 24/7” Joerg Mittermaier, managing director at TopRed Media.

Content playback is split into two channels that are displayed by the same player. “The content that is displayed in the shop window depends on opening times. Using digital consulting assistance, the shop employee can use a tablet to show information on the Smart Home screen,” he added.

All the content creation, centralised system management and technical support of the entire mobilcom-debitel digital signage network across Germany has been outsourced to TopRed Media and Ethniks Systems, who create and populate the Scala scripts on behalf of the retailer.

The Scala network connects to a centralised backend mobilcom-debitel system called Shop Database, which helps each shop to handle in-store retail space management and stock promotion.

“Shops use the Scala software to update their opening hours or UPS delivery details and also, to manage when the digital signage displays are running and when to switch them off,” said Joerg Mittermaier, Managing Director at TopRed Media. “At night, they would typically be off from 10pm to 5am especially in shopping malls which are deserted. However on the pedestrian facing street, they can run 24/7.” It also allows mobilcom-debitel to categorise shops and determine what type of advertising or content is tagged to go live at a particular store which may be accredited to sell energy solutions.

The Results

Digital signage has substantially increased the marketing space in the shops, according to Thieme. “Because we have multiple screens in the shop, we wanted to be able to connect them to one player with varying content,” she said. The solution has evolved over four years from a basic digital signage solution handling pictures and videos to take on a more interactive form. “The interactive window and the use of a tablet to manage the content on the display within the shop enables employees to explain information in a much clearer manner to customers and project more information on screen when necessary,” explained Mittermaier.

“Scala is the market leader in digital signage software,” concluded Mittermaier. “The system’s stability and reliability makes it possible for us as a partner to instantly react to customer requirements. The project started small but has expanded dramatically over the last year, to include the management of instore displays through tablets and the usage of touch displays in the shop window. Scala gives us the possibility to do everything we want. As a partner, we also have the unique ability to provide support over a large number of shops.”

Driving Digital Signage With Distinct Content at Wendy’s Global Locations

By Case Study

Wendys_img3Five years ago, the then CEO of Wendy’s International issued a directive that “when the QSR (Quick-Service Restaurant) industry went all digital, we needed to be ready with a fully scalable, operational, supportable solution for the entire brand,” remembers Nick DeCarlo, Director, Restaurant Solutions at Wendy’s. Today, Wendy’s has approximately 2,500 media players running digital menu boards powered by Scala software in many of its nearly 6,500 North American corporate and franchise restaurants.

Quick facts

  • International fast food chain Wendy’s wanted to stay ahead of the QSR competition in the digital signage revolution.
  • After numerous false starts with other software providers, Wendy’s selected Scala, which enables digital menu boards that display content tailored to local tastes and which can be altered either in-house or remotely.

“It wasn’t an easy journey for us,” DeCarlo says. “We went through several companies before we found what we were looking for.” What the other content management software companies lacked that Scala brought to the table was “getting the right content to the right display at the right store at the right time. That’s all that matters. If you can’t do that, that software doesn’t mean anything to us.”

“Most of the software companies talked about all the bells and whistles of their solution. But ninety-five percent of the solution should be about getting the right information and the right content to the right displays at the right time.” – Nick DeCarlo, Director, Restaurant Solutions, Wendy’s International

Process and results
The third largest QSR chain in the world, Wendy’s restaurants have different menus and pricing mechanisms to be displayed on digital menu boards. This required them to find an application program interface (API) that could “scale with us,” DeCarlo says. Scala’s platform is flexible and easy to customize, either by individual store managers right onsite or by calling Scala support. “Putting control of dynamic content in the restaurant managers’ hands is huge,” DeCarlo says, because there are no set dates for knowing when content will need to change. “Sometimes it’s when they run out of product.”

Other key benefits to working with Scala has been Scala Designer, which enables Wendy’s information technology team to easily upload custom designed and optimized content to individual restaurants—all with a small footprint. “Our slogan is ‘quality is our recipe’ and we want that to apply to everything we do,” DeCarlo says, and that means offering the highest-quality solution they could to show their food in the best possible light.

Wendys_img5Future work
Now that the hard work of finding hardware and software that meets their needs is behind them, “it’s time for the fun stuff,” DeCarlo says. This means experimenting with digital menu boards at drive-through windows, which comprises 65% of Wendy’s business and has been test marketed in Boston, Columbus and Phoenix. In some instances, like Phoenix, weather proved to be a challenge technically and financially. “It just required too much air conditioning and electricity to keep the units cool to be cost beneficial,” DeCarlo says.

More successful test programs have been queuing menu boards via Twitter, which was especially popular with teenagers. “We’re curious to see how that affects retention… how we can use it for loyalty programs,” DeCarlo says. Wendy’s is also looking into using Scala software for mobile app integration as well as limited time offers and feature items.

“These are big areas of opportunity in the digital signage field we are waiting to make a breakthrough on,” DeCarlo concludes.

Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur Modernizes with Digital Signage

By Case Study
[image_with_animation image_url=”11301″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In”]

Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL), Malaysia, underwent a major renovation which included giving a modern, futuristic look to a new 12-story building, and accommodating the growth in patients and hospital personnel.

With such a large expansion, enhancing communication efforts between staff and patients was essential, as was creating an engaging, informative environment for visitors. Switching to digital signage from traditional paper – printed announcements were manually posted in aluminum frames – reflected the hospital’s new, modern feel and is a quicker, cost- and time-effective way of engagement.

“PHKL plays a key pioneering role in the evolution of healthcare institutions and continues to set the tone on components including expertise in the use of technology, setting high standards of quality services to its patients. With the implementation of digital solutions, we are able to update more regularly with current content, something very interactive and innovative as well, to complement the modern theme of the building.”

Puan Norhaslina Othman,
Senior Operations Manager, PHKL

The year-long planning and execution of the project resulted in 45 total displays throughout six different zones in the new wing. Twenty-six units of 42” displays are strategically positioned at waiting areas within the main lobby, health screening centre, heart centre, endoscopy centre, spine and joint centre, hand and upper limb centre, satellite pharmacy and the paediatric cluster, keeping visitors and patients informed, educated and entertained with relevant content.

The main lobby boasts a 6×1 video wall made of 55” displays, used primarily as a digital doctor directory with content rotated to include significant events or campaign highlights when required.

Upon entering the main lobby, patients and visitors can use a digital wayfinding solution and interactive directory, featured on two 42” touchscreen displays on both sides of the reception counter. Their visit is immediately enhanced by the digital solution that follows through separate areas of the hospitals. In the lift zones of the hospital there are eleven units of 42” displays.

“We created more than 40 generic templates of various categories for respective zones using Scala Designer. Our intent was to make it even easier for the hospital staff to get equipped to the new digital content solution.”

-Click Grafix

Click Grafix oversaw the provision and installation of the hardware and Scala software in the new wing. PHKL also commissioned Click Grafix to train the hospital staff and manage development of content for a period of one year.

Using Scala Designer, the content development included the creation of easy-to-update generic templates for general content, the Pharmacy Zone, the Children Zone and for the video wall, some of which meant repurposing PHKL’s existing print ads, informational and promotional material. Scala designer makes it easy to bind content across a large network by transforming creative content into templates.

PHKL and Click Grafix took advantage of the ease of which the Scala platform allows for third-party integrations. Located in the Satellite Pharmacy, they executed customized integration with the queue system, where they are displaying the queue numbers on a side frame and content playing on the main frame. This application allows for patients to see where they’re at in line while also providing a platform for advertisement.

Click Grafix is able to remotely, quickly make updates to the content, but the easy-to-use interface was quickly picked up by hospital staff, who will take over some of the content updates moving forward using the templates Click Grafix created in Designer.

About DOBIT

DOBIT is passionate about technology, interested in innovation and attentive to detail. We are market leaders in implementing digital signage that makes our clients’ concepts sparkle! From A to Z, we help our customers to deploy digital communication successfully, from ‘digital concept’ to installation and evaluation.

We take digital communications a step further. Simply installing screens is no longer an innovative approach, and even dynamic content no longer surprises customers. So what does? We believe in the idea of a well-integrated concept. Technology is not an end in itself. Rather, it is what you do with it, and how perfectly you implement it, that makes an idea successful and complete.

In short, we devise digital concepts based on your aims and in line with your client’s expectations. Let’s work together to discover the sweet spot between technology and experience.

Digital Advertising Expansion

PT Metra Digital Media – one of Indonesia’s biggest advertising agencies, is continuously leveraging the latest in digital technology to meet market trends and needs. In 2014, PT MD Media expanded its advertising portfolio by offering Digital-Out-of-Home (DOOH) services. The company has successfully deployed more than 40 LEDs across Indonesia, providing great opportunity for advertisers to reach and capture the attention of more consumers. Pursuing its vision to deliver a robust and premiere DOOH solution, PT MD Media chose Scala Enterprise Digital Signage Software to efficiently manage LEDs scattered in various locations.

“PT MD Media has achieved fast and profitable growth by providing more dynamic digital advertising services. We are pleased with Scala! It gives us seamless control over our LEDs. Exactly what we need to dominate the digital advertising industry.”

Scala Content Manager (CMS)

Scala’s web-based central server allows quick and simplified operation management of a digital signage network. From its control center in Jakarta, PT MD Media can remotely monitor or change LED contents real time. Scala can also automate tasks by scheduling different ads and software maintenance, saving manpower time and cost.

Today, each LED loops an average of 5-10 advertisements, varying from still images to eye-catching videos – attracting not just consumers but potential advertising clients.

PT MD Media has gained huge profit growth from its DOOH business.

Advancing to an enterprise digital signage solution paved ways to new business opportunities. The technological edge PT MD Media has over the competition is directly attributed to the introduction of the digital network.
